How To: Write a Letter that Sells, Part I

Whether you are looking for a job interview, trying to sell merchandise, or seeking a donation for a class trip, you will have to put it in writing.  Here’s how to get started:

Immediately, tell your prospect why you are contacting him/her.  Some examples of first lines are:

  • I am writing to ask for your support for our class trip to New York.
  • I would like to come in to talk with you about an internship at your company.
  • Would you be able to donate two meals at your restaurant for our upcoming raffle?

These clear messages help to focus your prospect’s attention and encourage him/her to read on.
